Diesel Particulate Filters

Modern diesel cars are subject to strict emission limits. The Euro 5 standards now mean that every diesel car produced since 2009 must comply with the legislation and fit a Diesel Particulate Filter. Diesel Particulate Filters, also known as DPFs, are devices designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Whilst in theory Diesel Particulate Filters are a great idea, unfortunately the system can become blocked, causing a multitude of vehicle running problems.

Although DPF's are designed to burn off the soot, through processes known as Passive Regeneration and Active Regeneration, a range of factors can prevent these procedures from taking place. To avoid blockages loss of power and engine management issues, the DPF filters need to regenerate on a regular basis, the car will do this automatically if the vehicle has regular motorway usage, however if the car is restricted to short urban journeys the filter will fail to regenerate.

Common causes for complaint:

  • Frequent short journeys
  • Solely urban driving
  • Ignoring the DPF light
  • Lack of oil changes and resetting the indicator

Any warning lights related to the DPF or Anti - pollution system need to be addressed as soon as possible. As part of the regeneration process diesel is injected on the exhaust stroke into the engines cylinders, due to a lack of pressure at this time the oil becomes diluted and the level will begin to rise, this in turn can lead to an engine run on scenario or worse complete engine failure. A failure to service modern diesel vehicles at recommended intervals can lead to warning lights displayed, vehicle running in limp mode/reduced power, we recommend regular oil changes and can carry out oil life resets whilst in for service.

DPF Regeneration

If you ignore the warning light and keep driving in relatively slow, stop/start pattern soot loading within the filter will continue to build up until around 75%. Here you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights come on too. At this point driving at speed alone will not be enough for active or passive regeneration to occur, instead requiring a forced regeneration by one of our technicians. We also recommend changing the oil either before or after the process depending on the current oil level. DPF Replacement

Continued driving with the DPF light on and without successful regeneration results in excessive soot loading of the DPF, to a level where it is above 95% loaded. At this point cleaning or regeneration is not an option and replacement of the DPF is necessary.
